I lead a team of art directors, project managers, account managers, a video effects team and a production team in order to score this pitch for Epson's annual Product Launch and Sales Kick-Off. The brief was simple, to be as ambitious as we can—and did we go all out.
My inspiration for this is my favorite film, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Helmed as a sci-fi epic, and one of the greatest films of all time, it tells of a story of an astronaut stuck in space, with an AI called HAL 9000 for company, on his sojourn to his cosmic destination. For the event, I decided to pitch a space journey of an event walkthrough—guests will enter a long tunnel filled withEpson lightscene projectors, to project 3D graphics of galaxies, as if the attendees are actually walking through a long spaceship hallway.
Upon entering the ballroom, the guests are treated to a feast of music, food and entertainment, by waiters, waitresses and musicians dressed in alien prosthetics and astronaut costumes. I pitched the event as a space opera, with the host having to sing in between his scripted lines as intermission for the guests. The chosen host of the night was local celebrity Gian Magdangal, an actor who also starred in the Eraserheads-led musical "Ang Huling El Bimbo". The concept of the event hosting was not complete without a touch of inspiration from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Gian had to host alongside an "AI" called XCD—short for "Exceed", which is the title of the Epson event, to commemorate Epson's milestone achievements in their sales. This AI co-host was shown in pre-publicity invitations to guests as a video sent via email to guests, to mimic the futuristic AI concept. In real life, this AI co-host is actually voiced by a hired voice actor standing by the sidelines in the production area. I wrote the event script to show banter between Gian and XCD, as well as direct the event from start to finish, culminating in a grand finale of Gian performing Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now".
